Walking to the office on Monday morning I was both extremely nervous and excited to be starting as the newest trainee solicitor at JWP Solicitors. Having recently graduated from University in July and relocating to West Yorkshire last week I was concerned that I did not have enough practical experience within the legal profession and I would have a lot to prove to my new work colleagues.
By the end of my first day those worries had disappeared. The team at Pontefract were very friendly and welcoming and after a tour of the office and introductions I caught up on some of the cases that my supervisor, Delia, currently has within the Family Department before accompanying her into client meetings.
Two days into training I found myself looking after three new cases, addressing clients in meetings, drafting letters to them and even completing a dissolution of a civil partnership petition. On my third day I experienced a hearing in a Family Law Court for the first time where I also met more of the JWP team. The hearing was nothing like I imagined it to be; my eyes were finally open to family law in practice, something far more interesting than my textbooks led me to believe.
My fourth day was spent at the Leeds Office, meeting more of the team before returning back to Pontefract for my final day of the first week and their traditional Friday morning bacon sandwiches.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my first week, I have learnt so much and I look forward to what my future holds at JWP Solicitors.
